This course will consider ways in which psychoanalysis may be used to contemplate the contemporary social world. We will study psychoanalytic thinking that addresses topics such as prejudice; climate change; extreme economic disparity; the public’s relationship to facts; and the polarization of political discourse, including tendencies towards various forms of nationalism. We will discuss the ways in which social experiences impact the individual psyche, and place the clinical situation within its many social contexts. Implications for a psychoanalytically informed social justice practice will be explored.
Charges for reading material required for the seminars are not included in tuition. They are based upon copyright laws and change based on the content of the readers. The charges will be billed to you separately. Please submit your registration two weeks in advance in order to receive reading materials before the course starting date.
