These seminars are offered as a community service intended to supplement local training with psychoanalytic clinical instruction. The courses are offered free of charge to pre-and post-doctoral psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and pre-licensed MFT and social work interns currently in clinical placements.

This seminar will present a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective for working with queer and gay identified men in psychotherapy. The essentialist perspective on gender identity and sexual orientation inherent in traditional psychoanalytic theory will be critiqued. Recent psychoanalytic contributions addressing gay and queer male experiences will also be reviewed, with an emphasis on highlighting important developmental milestones. Experiences of intersectionality, including race, culture, class, and religion will also be addressed. We will view video clips from television and film that provide dramatic portrayals of gay and queer male experiences. The implications of psychoanalytic theory for gay and queer male patients will be examined in the literature and through clinical illustrations from the instructor and students
