SFCP Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training Program

Admission Procedures

  • Licensed Mental Health professionals may apply to the child/adolescent analytic program with or without adult analytic training.
  • Licensed Mental Health professionals may apply simultaneously to both the child/adolescent and the adult analytic programs.
  • A candidate in SFCP’s adult training program or another analytic training program may apply to the child/adolescent program. When appropriate, a streamlined application process will be considered.

Admissions procedures for Candidates from the Adult Analytic Training Program at SFCP; Graduates from SFCP’s Adult Analytic Training Program; or Graduates from other IPA approved adult programs.

Satisfactory performance in the adult curriculum or graduation from an IPA accredited psychoanalytic institute is required for admission. The C/AAP Steering Committee will consult with the Adult Progressions and Graduation Committee, as to the performance of the candidate in the adult training program, when appropriate. Graduate adult analysts from other institutes who apply will be reviewed by the Adult Admissions Committee, as well as the Child/Adolescent Analytic Program Steering Committee for admission to the C/AA Program.

Admissions procedures for simultaneous application to both Child/Adolescent and Adult Training Programs

Individuals may apply to both programs simultaneously. Applicants will be interviewed by two members of the Child/Adolescent Analysis Steering Committee to evaluate suitability for training. The evaluation includes aptitude, background knowledge and experience. Prior training in child psychiatry or psychology, or its equivalent, is desirable, but not required. Interviews will be conducted even when the applicant is already known to the Child/Adolescent Analysis Steering Committee. The Committee will decide, in consultation with the Adult Admissions Committee, on the admission of prospective applicants to the C/AA Program.

Admissions Procedures for the Child/Adolescent Only Analytic Training Program

The admissions requirements are the same as requirements for the Adult Analytic Training Program. Since applicants will discuss their child and adolescent therapy cases rather than adult therapy cases as part of the interviewing process, they should have some ongoing child or adolescent therapy cases to present.

In all of these procedures, the Steering Committee of the Child/Adolescent Analytic Program will decide on the admission of the applicants to the program and will report to the Psychoanalytic Education Division when applicants are admitted. The Chair(s) of the Steering Committee of the CA/A Program may elect to present the applicant to the Psychoanalytic Education Division for consultation regarding admission decisions. The applicant must complete the standard application. As in the application to the adult program, the applicant will have three personal interviews by adult and child/adolescent analysts, and two sets of clinical interviews by child analysts.
