The question of effectiveness of different weekly session frequencies in psychoanalyses is debated in clinical practice as well as in psychoanalytic training. The IPA Research Committee led the development of this empirical study which was presented in the February 2022 SFCP Scientific Meeting. MODE is designed to compare low and high frequency psychoanalytic treatments of patients with chronic depression and early life trauma. Outcome data being collected includes fMRI studies to assess brain plasticity during treatment, as well dream diaries which may show changes in qualities of dreams using contemporary methods of dream analysis. The Primary Investigator, Dr. Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber will provide an update on the study with a focus on clinical observations to date. The MODE study was awarded the Wallerstein Fellowship, based at SFCP, in 2022, and is also funded by the IPA and APsaA.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  1. explain how MODE investigates the influence of weekly frequency of treatment sessions on teh outcome of treatment.
  2. summarize characteristic types of change in patient dreams during psychoanalytic treatments.

Please see the Policies tab for complete CME/CE credits information.
