Can one practice psychoanalysis individually without the collective support of a community that values creative independence? In our next faculty pop-up we would like to think together about our experiences of our collectivity, our institutional life, and our individual participation in it.

A tendency to imagine that we function autonomously as psychoanalytically informed clinicians can obscure our dependency on a psychoanalytic environment — an environment which, in turn, only remains viable within broader social, economic, and cultural support. The preservation of our individuality and autonomy exists in tension with our need for a supportive community.

Since this topic applies to us all and not just the faculty, we are expanding attendance to the entire membership. Four of our colleagues will offer brief personal reflections on their experience of membership and belonging in our analytic community.
