Darian Leader — In Conversation with Israel Katz
What is madness? Is everyone mad? How has Lacan expanded the approach to psychosis? And, what are we talking about when we talk about jouissance? Is it painful pleasure, pleasurable pain, or something else?  Darian Leader and Israel Katz will discuss these matters and more in this upcoming Dialogues program.
Darian Leader is a Lacanian psychoanalyst and founding member of the Center for Freudian Analysis and Research in London. He is a thinker, speaker, and writer whose intelligence and clarity reach a wide international audience — Lacanian and beyond.  Among his prolific publications are titles such as: Jouissance: Sexuality, Suffering, and Satisfaction (2021),  Why Can’t We Sleep (2019), Strictly Bipolar (2013), What Is Madness? (2011), and Why Do People Get Ill? (with David Corfield) (2002). In all of his writings, Leader illustrates his belief that psychoanalysis thrives on real questions — on exploring what we don’t know — and inspires his readers to question even further.
Israel Katz is a psychoanalyst, Member, and Faculty at SFCP. He is also a psychiatrist who works in private practice and San Francisco Community Mental Health. For the past seven years, he has been teaching an ongoing in-depth course on the Seminars of Lacan (along with Martine Aniel), as well as a variety of courses throughout the Bay Area involving the application of Freud and Lacan. Most recently, he has become an aficionado and teacher of Latin American and Lacanian psychoanalysis, and the relationship between the two.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- elaborate on the significance of the object for Lacan, its similarities and differences from Freud and other psychoanalysts.
- examine the differences among the primary forms of psychotic structure: paranoia, the schizophrenias, and melancholia.
