Throughout the international psychoanalytic community, James Grotstein’s analytic work advocated for learning from the various analytic traditions populating its universe, especially from British Object Relations theory. In honor of Grotstein’s work in comparative psychoanalytic theory, and his longstanding friendship and collaboration with Thomas Ogden, there will be a series of 3 virtual meetings featuring Ogden’s unique interpretive readings of seminal papers by D.W. Winnicott and W.R. Bion, focusing on the clinical implications of his approach.  Mental health clinicans from all clinical backgrounds are welcome, and the program will be offered via Zoom video-conferencing (Pacific time) to allow for discussion with participants from all geographical locations.  Participants are encouraged to register for the full 3-part series for maximum immersion; however single lecture tickets are also available.  Pre-registration is required, and CE/CME credit is available on an optional basis for each program.

On Thomas Ogden’s Interpretative Reading of the Theoretical and Clinical Work of D.W. Winnicott.

Date:Saturday, January 20, 2024
Time:9:00am – 11:00am Pacific Time
Presenter:Peter Goldberg, PhD
CME/CE:2 CME/CE Credits available

In this presentation, Peter Goldberg, PhD takes up Ogden’s distinctive interpretative reading of some of D.W. Winnicott’s classic papers, such as: Primitive Emotional DevelopmentCommunicating and Not Communicating Leading to a Study of Certain Opposites and The Use of an Object.  The question addressed: how does Ogden deploy some of Winnicott’s core ideas to effect his own transformational synthesis?

Peter Goldberg, PhD is a graduate analyst and co-Chair of the Faculty Committee of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP). His training as a psychotherapist included several years in community mental health, working with a chronic schizophrenic population and in adolescent day treatment settings, as well as a fellowship in child and adult psychotherapy at Children’s Hospital of San Francisco. He is currently in the private practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and is involved extensively in supervision, group consultation, and lecturing in the area of British object relations theory as well as teaching at SFCP, PINC, and the Wright Institute.  His latest book: Here I am Alive: The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis (with Adam Blum and Michael Levin, (Columbia Univ. Press, 2023).

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  • explicate how Ogden deploys Winnicott’s ideas about primitive emotional development in his understanding of early object relations and how they organize the way he listens to and understands its development in the analytic situation.
  • explicate how Ogden uses Winnicott’s notion of direct and indirect communication in the way he listens in silence as well as when he makes analytic interventions.
  • explicate how Ogden deploys Winnicott’s notion of subjective and objective object usage in the way he understands and interprets his patient’s psychological communications.

On Thomas Ogden’s Interpretative Reading of the Theoretical and Clinical Work of W.R. Bion

Date:Saturday, February 24, 2024
Time:9:00am – 11:00am Pacific Time
Presenter:Joseph Aguayo, PhD
CME/CE:2 CME/CE Credits available

In this presentation, Joseph Aguayo, PhD takes up Ogden’s distinctive interpretative reading of some of W.R. Bion’s seminal theoretical and clinical ideas, particularly as they shape Ogden’s understanding of the clinical situation.  In papers, such as Bion’s ‘Notes on Memory and Desire’ and from the extensive clinical and supervisorial examples culled from Bion’s Clinical Seminars, (1967-1978) the issue of how the abandonment of memory and desire clears the analytic space for the analyst’s intuition, and how the analyst deploys notions of emotional aliveness and deadness in the analytic situation are taken up.  These ideas are also understood in terms of Ogden’s emphasis on epistemological and ontological ways in which the analyst co-exists as an intersubjective facilitator of the patient’s growth and development.

Joseph Aguayo, PhD is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California, an Associate Member of the New Center for Psychoanalysis, and a Guest Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society in London.  He merges his clinical and research interests by publications in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis on the clinical history of Kleinian, Bionian and Winnicottian psychoanalysis.  Recent publications:  “Reappraising John O. Wisdom’s Critique of W.R. Bion’s Learning from Experience at a Meeting of the British Psychoanalytical Society—17 October 1964,” (IJP, 2022).  His latest book:  Introducing the Clinical Work of W.R. Bion, (Routledge Bion Series, 2023).

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  • explicate how Ogden deploys Bion’s ideas about how the abandonment of memory and desire clears the analytic field for the operation of clinical intuition.
  • explicate how Ogden’s deploys Bion’s notion of countertransference as originating in a disturbance of feeling in terms of evaluating the emotional aliveness or deadness in analytic session work.
  • explicate how Ogden depicts Bion’s style of clinical inquiry in his clinical and supervisorial work.

Panel Presentation on Four Iconic Papers by Thomas Ogden

Date:Saturday, March 9, 2024
Time:9:00am – 12:00pm Pacific Time
Panelists:Joseph Aguayo, PhDMaxine Anderson, MDPeter Goldberg, PhDBruce Reis, PhD, FIPA, BCPsa
CME/CE:3 CME/CE Credits available

In this three-hour meeting, there is a panel discussion of four central analytic contributions made by Thomas Ogden.  (1) The Autistic-Contiguous Position, (1989)—discussed by Peter Goldberg, (Berkeley/San Francisco); (2) The Analytic Third:  Working with Intersubjective Facts, (1994) – discussed by Bruce Reis, (New York City); (3) On Holding and Containing, Being and Dreaming, (2004)— discussed by Joseph Aguayo, (Los Angeles); (4) On Intuiting the Truth: Bion’s Notes on Memory and Desire, (2015) – discussed by Maxine Anderson, (Seattle). To facilitate the panelists’ discussion of these papers, brief recorded overviews of all four papers will be made available to all registered attendees 3 weeks before this scheduled meeting.  This allows for discussion of how the analyst deploys sensory modes of being with his/her patients; how a complex interactional field of intersubjectivity permeates the analytic atmosphere; how to differentiate Winnicottian ‘holding’ from Bionian ‘containing’ and finally, how analysis can come to life vibrantly in the ‘here and now.’

Maxine Anderson, MD, trained in psychoanalysis in both the USA and London, England. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst for several psychoanalytic institutes in North America; a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA); and a Fellow of the British Institute of Psychoanalysis. She has published widely on psychoanalytic topics especially relevant to contemporary Kleinian and Bionian thought. Her most recent explorations into the nature of reality attempt to bridge the disciplines of psychoanalysis, neuroscience and philosophy.  Her last book:  The Wisdom of Lived Experience:  Views from Psychoanalysis, Neuroscience, Philosophy and Metaphysics.  (Routledge, 2016).

Press, 2023).

Bruce Reis, PhD, FIPA, BCPsa is a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst in private practice in NYC, a faculty member and Training & Supervising Analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), NY, and Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at NYU’s Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He is Regional North American Editor, Associate Editor, and North American Editor for Book Reviews for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.  His latest bookCreative Repetition and Intersubjectivity: Contemporary Freudian Explorations of Trauma, Memory, and Clinical Process, (Routledge, 2020).

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  • explicate how the analyst can approach and articulate sensory disorders in analytic work.
  • explicate how the analyst exists in an intersubjective field with his/her patients.
  • explicate the difference in how Bion and Winnicott deploy their distinctive concepts, such as container/contained and holding in the analytic situation.
  • explicate some of the differences between Bion and Winnicott’s ideas about the analyst and patient’s experience of the analytic ‘here and now’ moment.
