Scientific research has answered the major questions about borderline personality organization: it exists, it is common in clinical practice, and its core features are well- established, both theoretically and empirically. It gives rise to predictable countertransference dilemmas, with clinicians commonly reporting feeling overwhelmed, helpless, or inadequate. This program, integrating both psychoanalytic theory and empirical evidence, will review core features of borderline personality organization and their implications for treatment.

Jonathan Shedler, PhD is an SFCP Faculty, Training and Supervising Analyst, Chair of Science Communication for APSA,  and Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at UCSF.

He is best known for his article The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, which won worldwide acclaim for establishing psychoanalytic therapy as an evidence-based treatment.

Dr. Shedler’s research and writing are shaping contemporary views of personality styles and their treatment. He is author of more than 100 scientific and scholarly articles, creator of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) for personality diagnosis and clinical case formulation, and co-author of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM-2 and forthcoming PDM-3).

Dr. Shedler lectures internationally, leads workshops for professional audiences, consults to U.S. and international government agencies, and provides expert clinical case consultation to mental health professionals worldwide.

One of his more recent chapters is “The personality syndromes. In R. Feinstein (Ed.), Personality Disorders. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022.
