In recent years, there have been multiple requests for a dedicated, judgment-free space for SFCP members to:
- learn about and discuss topics in the current DEI discourse.
- share our challenges and anxieties in addressing these issues in teaching and clinical settings.
- create psychoanalytic frameworks for working across differences within our learning groups.
As a first step toward these goals, SFCP is offering a series of online DEI Conversations, divided into four modules, as described below.
Purpose:
To support SFCP members and learning groups in talking with each other about DEI issues.
Content/Structure:
- Focused on discussing concepts in current DEI discourse which will allow us to think further about what this means for SFCP.
- Sessions will be dialogic and highly participatory.
- Participants will drive the discussions.
Logistical Overview:
2-hour online modules. There will be four modules, each offered multiple times during this academic year. It is recommended to take the modules sequentially, as the concepts will build on each other.

David Luna, SFCP’s DEI Consultant and volunteers from the DEI Steering Committee, the Strategic Direction “Promoting an Inclusive & Reflective Organization” Team, and other members.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:
- describe the effects of explicit and implicit power differentials on dynamics within learning groups, organizations, and society as well as the clinical setting.
- describe ‘Race’ as a construct, including its historical origins and its usage in maintaining existing power dynamics in groups and society, as well as how this construct can operate in a clinical setting.
- define and describe the concept of ‘White Supremacy’, including its historical origins as well as past and present manifestations of this ideology in institutional, societal, and clinical practices.
