In this course we will use the work of several psychoanalytic theorists and writers to think about important aspects of trans experience(s)–intrapsychic, interpsychic, and socio-cultural. We will consider that there are many experiences of being trans with both points of commonality and points of divergence. We will discuss how we might use these ideas in our work with transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive patients. Although psychoanalysis, and the field of psychology in general, has historically pathologized, and in some cases currently pathologizes, transgender people and transgender identities we will take a non-pathologizing approach to this material.
