San Francisco Seasoned Clinicians Program

This year we will offer a fifteen week series of case conferences for psychoanalytically oriented clinicians who have practiced psychotherapy for a minimum of 20 years. The case conferences will be taught by SFCP faculty members. The program will provide participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their clinical work through in-depth discussions with instructors and fellow seasoned practitioners. Accordingly, we will limit the number of participants to 12.

Listening to our patients and ourselves shapes the foundation of an analytic treatment. Psychoanalytic listening reaches below the level of speech, to an older and deeper language, the language of the unconscious. The intimacy, intensity, and poignancy of unconscious communication, more felt than known, is reached through the portals of transference, countertransference, reverie, and dreams. Using these portals, we’ll listen to openings and barriers to emotional growth and the ways that resisting dogma and certitude can propel us into a realm of meaning and creation where emotional life can live, grow, and transform. Participants will be encouraged to free associate, make links with material, and listen, think about, and relate to their own and each other’s voices.

Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to

  1. identify unconscious processes in transference, countertransference, reveries and dreams, and discuss and evaluate their relationship to the therapeutic process.
  2. explore and evaluate ways of listening to their patients and themselves and identify interventions that contribute to emotional growth.
  3. explore and evaluate the ways that dogma and certitude creates obstacles and barriers in the analytic dyad and identify how they may lead to impasse or inhibit emotional growth.
  4. compare and contrast Freud and Bion's theories of dreams and their ongoing significance in emotional growth, interpretation, and analytic engagement.
  5. identify and evaluate modes of receptivity, listening skills, and approaches to emotional contact and interpretation.

The case conference will utilize the combined reactions and insights of the attendees to understand the full panoply of conscious and unconscious contributions to the manifest material and the transference/countertransference dimensions of the presented case material. Opportunity will be provided for attendees to consider and share with one another how the discussion of the case can be incorporated into each member’s approach and technique of treating patients.

Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to

  1. identify and describe manifest and unconscious expressions of the patient's transference.
  2. formulate and deliver interpretations to the patient regarding their transference to the therapist.
  3. recognize and utilize the therapist's countertransference reactions to the patient to develop clinical understanding and interventions.
  4. identify how each of the participant's reaction to and perspective of the case material reflects a dimension of the total clinical situation and dynamic relationship between the patient and therapist.
  5. organize the patient's manifest communication and concerns and unconscious wishes and conflicts by utilizing metaphorical threads presented in the clinical material.

The case conference will be taught keeping the subjectivity of the therapist in mind. The overarching concept of what shapes the therapist, shapes the therapy will be a guiding principle as we discuss clinical material.

Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to

  1. recognize and identify the role of the therapist's family of origin in setting the stage for the therapist we become.
  2. understand how identifications with supervisors and therapists contribute to the development of our own therapeutic style.
  3. identify how our personal needs for connection and protection influence self-disclosure during a clinical hour.
  4. understand the role of social identity, both visible and invisible, within the clinical hour and how it influences our clinical stance.
  5. analyze the effects in the clinical hours of the therapist having a close identification with the patient as the result of sharing a similar personal history.

In this segment we shall use a case conference format with material from both participants and instructor as a basis for discussion. Several readings will provide a stimulus for considering the potential usefulness of such clinical concepts as-- interpretation vs. interaction vs. enactment; transference and countertransference as compromise formations; the roles of different components of the treatment relationship--real vs. transference vs.transference neurosis; destructiveness and power relations in treatment.

Participants will be able to

  1. understand clinical process in a deeper fashion.
  2. have a more thorough understanding of therapeutic impact of psychotherapy.
  3. understand different types of therapeutic technique in their work.
  4. gain a better understanding of how to identify transference and counter-transference phenomena.
  5. gain a better understanding of the impact and role of destructive forces and power relations in the treatment relationship and outcome.

Registration Deposit

A $ 100.00 registration deposit is due upon registration.  This $ 100.00 deposit if fully refundable until December 26, 2017, and the remaining balance is due in full by January 27, 2018.

CME/CE Credits Fee

The credits cost per hour is $10 for all SFCP members, and $12 for non-SFCP members.  SFCP has established a cap cost of $200 for credits requested per program.  The cost of CME/CE credits is separate from the program fees and billed individually upon the request for credits at the end of the seminar.

Refund Policy

  • There will be a full refund if one requests to drop the program on or before December 26, 2017.
  • There will be a 10% cancellation fee if one requests to drop the program on or after December 27, 2017
  • There will be no refund for classes in progress, and SFCP will provide a pro-rated refund of tuition for classes not yet begun.

CME/CE Credits Policy and Attendance Requirement

Physicians, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Registered Nurses will be awarded AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ on an hour for hour basis; see the program description for the maximum of credits awarded for each program.

Psychologists participating in long-term programs (lecture series) who can demonstrate a minimum of 80% attendance for a seminar within the series, are eligible to obtain these credits by notifying the SFCP office after the seminar has ended. Seminars of 4 sessions or fewer require 100% attendance. Participants will pay the appropriate fee for the seminar (based on the number of credits they obtain), and then will receive a verification letter of their attendance.

100% attendance is required for short-term programs (individual course).

Psychologists self-certify the number of hours they have completed on their renewal form (whether online or paper). The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

REGISTERED NURSES: The San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 02677, on an hour for hour basis.
